GINA AND JOY

10/18/22 – This is Vet Tech Week and we have to recognize our very own licensed veterinary technician, Gina DeLuca Jenio. Gina and I met about 18 years ago (I can’t believe it) when she worked at Moore Veterinary Hospital. Through a series of events, we came into contact again when she worked at Animal Urgent Care and she became the inspiration and co-founder of 4 Paws 1 Heart. To say Gina is an amazing vet tech would be an understatement. She continues to learn every day, has a network of veterinary care experts like no other, and her love for animals has no boundaries. Gina’s love and care has been the savior for so many animals, either with the help of 4 Paws 1 Heart or just in how she performs the job of vet tech. Right now, she is the angel who watches over our Nunzio when he has to be seen and treated for his hyperthyroidism. I thought I would post Gina’s RIP (2020) for Joy who was brought into the emergency hospital a few years back and which I think says everything about Gina. This is a photo of the two of us when she brought Joy to our home after she was rescued. Angels are not only in heaven. – Diana.

“I recently became aware of some very sad news, and it is with a heavy heart that I am letting those who remember her know that Joy passed away.

About 5 years ago, Joy was rescued by 2 Michigan State Troopers who responded to a call where a stray dog had been hit by a car.

It was late at night and the very compassionate troopers took her to the Emergency where I had been working.

I offered to take her into my home while she recovered and 4 paws 1 heart, helped with funding medical for her extensive injuries.

I have fostered countless animals and loved them all, but Joy was incredibly special and close to my heart..

She fit into my home and into my pack, but I knew eventually her long term care required being with someone who had the ability to allow her to thrive.

The accident left her broken. She had multiple pelvic fractures, injured knees, internal bruising, and her pain was extremely hard to control even with even the strongest meds. She couldn’t walk without being in severe pain, and she cried often. At night I layered plastic underneath her and covered her feet with my socks, wrapped her body in a blanket, and held her all until the trembling stopped. I carried her to and from work every day, took her for CT scan, knee surgery, and physical therapy.

A couple months later, the time came to give her up and my chest burned.. Not everyone understands how hard it is to pour your heart into an animal that needs you so desperately, you get them better, and then you watch them leave with the next person… The person that you trust to take over where you left off..

Joy was given a very wonderful life that she deserved, but her health took a sudden turn for the worse.

I will never ever forget her..

Rest peacefully beautiful girl.

Gina”

LEIOMY HAPPY UPDATE

10/18/22 – We all love happy updates so here is Leiomy. In late June, 2022 she was found on the side of the Lodge freeway by a very caring daughter and mom. At the time they thought that Leiomy was healthy and just asked if we could help with the ‘usual’ vetting — vaccines, testing, and spay. But, unfortunately, Leiomy was found to have heart worm. Had these wonderful ladies not rescued her, she would have died a horrible death on the streets. So, Leiomy became one of the prior commitments I talked about during our $2,000 Sweetest Day Match. Leiomy was started on her 30-day regiment and at the end of that began her injections. Here is her rescuer’s update after the second injection:

“I wanted to send you a few updated pics of Leiomy. She’s doing great after her last 2 heart worm shots earlier this month. She’s a very affectionate and intelligent dog and is so grateful for your help in getting her safe and off of the streets. – Brooke”

A huge thanks to not only Brooke and her mom, but also to Comforts Place who also reported as to how sweet disposition of Leiomy, and our village of supporters. – diana.

RIP WOLFIE

10/17/22 – The pneumonia was just too severe. Wolfie was taken in by a very caring woman who has done so much for so many cat orphans, Wolfie was just one. As we reported on October 14, our caring doctors at Orion Animal Hospital took Wolfie in as an emergency and provided treatment and medications for home. Unfortunately, Wolfie died peacefully in his rescuer’s arms during the night. Again, I said to his rescuer, Barb, “Thank you for giving him warm arms and love while he crossed the rainbow bridge, so many die on the streets never knowing love and warmth. May God Bless You Always.” – diana.

ABUSED MISTER MEDICALLY TREATED NOW NEEDS A HOME

10/16/22 – Please share and let’s get Mister a home. We were happy to cover the medical for Mister and his littermates. It truly takes a village of like-minded, caring people. But the last step can sometimes being the hardest—-finding a furever, loving home.-diana.

P. S. A huge thank you to all of our supporters who were able to donate to our $2,000 Sweetest Day Match—we met the goal!! And hopefully, we will have a great turnout at our November 30 Fundraiser (see event) and we can go back to normal!

Beaten, abused, scars and a missing tooth this poor 6 year old boy has been through the ringer until he made his way into a trap and was taken off the streets. Meet …MISTER he’s all black with a slight golden reddish tail tip. He’s looking for a rescue or a wonderful human to take him in and show him the love he never knew was out there! He’s going to need time and patience but I’m sure he will turn into the most loving companion for someone special !

Recently neutered & given shots. Message me if you are that person or know of a rescue willing to take on this special boy. He deserves a second chance at life

Special thanks to 4paws1heart for sponsoring this boy & feral city kitty trappers – Sam

WOLFIE DROPPED OFF WITH PNEUMONIA

10/14/22 – This beautiful boy, Wolfie, was dropped off with a rescuer who we’ve helped in the past. Wolfie was breathing heavily and the rescuer was very concerned. Fortunately, Wolfie was taken in as an emergency to our great doctors at Orion Animal Hospital and it was determined that he has pneumonia. Wolfie is on meds but his prognosis is very guarded. Please remember him in your prayers. Although we are still on a hold, we couldn’t turn this little guy away under the circumstances. – diana.

HUGE TRAPPING EFFORT

10/13/22 – A huge thanks to Angelina who has been caring for all of these cats/kittens on her property, our rescue friends, Debra Ann Nelson, Jo Sweeney Addington, who have gone to the property several times (from the far east side of Macomb County to Novi), have taken in at least 10 kittens in the last year to foster and find homes, and who gathered the many traps required for trapping and helped in getting all of the cats to Comfort’s Place by Pet Taxi. And, I honestly don’t know what we would do without our good friend, Deb Friedman, owner of Comfort’s Place, who, with her veterinarian, blocked out a huge amount of time yesterday in order to spay/neuter/vaccinate 16 adults and 3 kittens. The 16 adults were released back to the property where they will continue to be cared for (many have bonded over the years) and, with Deb Friedman’s help, the 3 kittens went to a rescue so they could be adopted.

This was one of the major commitments 4 Paws 1 Heart took on before we had to put a hold on any significant assistance for new cases. Of the 19 cats, 18 were female. 18 females, if left intact, can produce an average of 270 cats in ONE YEAR. Keep in mind that a female cat can get pregnant as early as 4 months and can continue to reproduce for her entire life. This is how your donations make a difference. And whether you are a donor, a rescuer, a community caretaker, a foster, a member of the medial team, or an adopter, you should pat yourself on the back for being a part of the solution! – diana.

***2 and 1/2 days to double your donation during the $2,000 Sweetest Day Match.

It’s a really big day today. My feral community left at 7:30 this morning, via Pet Taxi, with Angelina Manly . She’s meeting up with Jo and Debbie of 4 Paws 1 Heart, where all 19 of my feral cats will be neutered/spayed.

This is a very emotional day for me . I hope everyone makes it through this ok. They’re scared . My studio feels so very lonely, without them.

I can’t thank 4 Paws 1 Heart enough, and all the incredible, dedicated ladies that make up this wonderful organization. This also would not have been possible, without the driving Angie at Pet Taxi. Thank you so much. Such incredible women, I’m surrounded by

Thank you to all of you that donated. I’m not sure we made enough , and if you’d still like to donate. – Angelina

REST IN PEACE, SWEET TUXY

10/12/22 – It was about 2 months ago when we were contacted about this beautiful cat who showed up on the porch of a loving couple who already had been taking care of outdoor cats and who had a special needs kitty in her home. Tuxy had severe diarrhea and vomiting. The rescuer took Tuxy to a vet who treated the vomiting. Tuxy seemed to get better for awhile but when the severity started again, the rescuer contacted us. We started Tuxy out with being seen at Orion Animal Hospital. She was again giving medication for the severe diarrhea but shortly after, the severity increased and Tuxy was seen again. At that time, an ultra sound was done and a large mass was discovered on Tuxy’s intestines. Her red blood cell was high but her white blood cell count was off the charts. The doctor strongly suspected cancer but couldn’t confirm it without a biopsy. The doctor believed the mass was the cause of the severe vomiting and diarrhea. I spoke with the doctor who explained the options, which had also been discussed with the rescuer. The options were surgery with a very poor prognosis or steroids. The rescuer decided on the steroids. Tuxy loved to snuggle and soaked up all of the love she could get. But then, approximately 3 weeks after starting steroid treatment, she peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge at her new, loving home. Once again, we all find some comfort knowing that Tuxy wasn’t left to die a horrible death on the streets and though she appeared to have had a tough life, in the end she knew people cared.

The importance of having the funds available is critical to our mission. Individual donations and fundraisers are our only sources of revenue. We are blessed to have so many generous supporters but, like so many of the other animal advocacy groups in our communities, we can’t deny the serious impacts the virus and inflation has had on the stray animals. Animals abandoned by their owners has increased — anyone who has bought cat/dog food in the past months, can attest to the difficulty in not only feeding one’s family but also feeding the family’s pets. The stray population has increased because of closures (temporary and permanent) of veterinary hospitals and now understandable increased costs. So thank you for caring and remember that there is still time to double your donation during our $2,000 Sweetest Day Match. – diana.

MILLIE’S FOSTER FAILURE

About 5 months ago Millie was posted on Facebook by a friend I went to school with. She was just a baby kitten found wandering over by the Cider Mill sick and malnourished. My friend and co worker took her in as a foster and 4 paws 1 heart covered her age appropriate vaccines, FeLV/FIV test, deworming, treatments, and her spay surgery. Millie had a few applications, but she was waiting for the perfect fit. Well, it turns out she was right where she was meant to be all along. Tracey became a foster failure and Millie wouldn’t have it any other way.. Gina
