She was rescued from nearly being hit by a car. Her family doesn’t want her back and she is positive for Heartworm Disease. 4 Paws 1 Heart has helped with initial treatment of x rays and exam, but Bella needs a rescue to take her and find placement. She is in a temporary foster home with her rescuer. If you can help Bella please let me know and I’ll put you in touch with her foster. She is 49lbs, sweet wth everyone she meets, and a good girl. 5/8/23 – DeeDee is a very sweet dog who was found in the woods. An owner never claimed her. She has been vaccinated and will be tested for heart worm and spayed complements of 4 Paws 1 Heart. Thankfully, she is safe and warm with a foster. – diana

We rescued Swartz on Sunday evening after he showed up on a porch late in the evening. The homeowners said he was crying and crying to get in, but they could not bring him in because he was so sick. His eyes were barely open and he was super congested, so they reached out to us for help. One of our fosters volunteered and picked him up and kept him in her garage for the evening, monitoring him. The next morning he had his first vet appointment at Orion Animal Hospital — thanks to 4 Paws 1 Heart for taking him under their wing; we had no funds to vet poor Swartz.
This poor boy is a mess, but it didn’t stop him from making biscuits and purring through his exam. Both eyes are super infected. His left eye is either missing or sunken in from the infection or maybe a birth defect. It will have to be evaluated after seven days of medication. Both of his ears are painfully infected. He has an upper respiratory infection and is very congested. We were sent home with ear drops, an ointment and antibiotics. The doctor will reevaluate his eyes on our next appointment when some of the infection is gone. Late that evening, when I went to check on him, give meds and wash his face up a bit more, he was literally reaching through the cage for me. I wrapped him up and rocked him and talked to him for a bit. It’s amazing how loving he is even when you know he’s in pain.

Update April 20, 2023
Swartzy has not used his litter box in more than 24 hours and has not eaten so we had an emergency visit to the vet today again, thanks to 4 Paws1 Heart!! I reached out to Diana and she didn’t think twice. She told me to take him in. The vet put him on an additional antibiotic, as well as an appetite enhancer. She did say his ears are looking better, so we did have something positive.
Over the next few days Swartzy did not want to eat. It was very concerning. We opened a can of tuna fish, chopped it up really tiny using the juice that was in it and would put a piece in his back right corner of his mouth, lift his chin and have him swallow it. We did that every couple hours — a good four or five bites; by Sunday evening he finally ate and we celebrated.
Update May 2, 2023 on our rescue Swartzy
Follow up vet appointment at Orion animal Hospital with Dr. Blasses. Swartzy’s left eye is not useful. His right eye is working; he can see out of it. There is some scar tissue, but neither eye has infection at this point. We will be monitoring his eyes. If his left eye continues to get infected they will have to do surgery. His ears are still infected, but looking better. He is no longer congested, but she has put him on a 10 day anabiotic to get him through the rest of this sickness. We are so happy to see him getting better.

Swartz will need to be neutered and vaccinated in two weeks. We are praying that his one eye will not need to be removed. But, as we’ve said in the past — we will always finish what we started and we will be there for Swartz until he is ready to be adopted. Please keep him in your prayers. 5/5/23 – She was found wandering around a yard. The homeowners kept her in their pool house but could not keep her in their house. They contacted a friend who contacted another friend who happened to be a friend of 4 Paws 1 Heart.
Linda, who contacted us, was told by her friends that Nala had probably been thrown out when her owner died. She was extremely friendly, approximately 2-3 years old but not spayed. Linda took her from the pool house and decided to find her a home. Linda realized that Nala had not been spayed and brought her to the Humane Society of St. Clair where she was spayed and vaccinated but it turned out that only one ovary could be located. Thus, the doctor was concerned that she still would be able to get pregnant and advised Linda that if she again went into heat, that she would have to have surgery again at a standard vet. That is when we were contacted.
Nala was seen by one of the great doctors at Patterson Veterinary Hospital and surgery was performed. Thankfully, a tiny ovary was found and removed. After Nala recovered, Linda was able to find her the purrfect home with a friend. Nala is now living happily ever after. – diana
5//4/23 – Grace and her husband, Tony, are good friends whom we met because of 4 Paws 1 Heart. They are amazing people who will foster abused Bernese Mountain Dogs who are sold and abused in puppy mills. We’ve been fortunate to meet a few of their fosters and it’s heartbreaking but amazing what love and care will do to make these very loving dogs adoptable. Grace said that this particular mill has been on the radar of the Agriculture Department but was only give a 21 day suspension for the abuse of their dogs.
I just thought it important to share a personal example of the affects of breeding and criminal dog breeding. – diana
This puppy mill dog was called #36. How do I know? It’s tattooed inside her ear! We are calling her Breanna (Bree), which means strong. She is named after a very beautiful, brave, and strong young girl that I know.
Bree came to us last Saturday, to be fostered. She is the most frightened, shut down dog I have ever seen. Four days later, and she is still cowering in corners. She ducks when we pet her, and then, thankfully, seems to enjoy it. She refuses to walk into another room, or go outside, and panics when she sees a leash. We carry her because her fear paralyzes her. At this point we celebrate the small things, like when she licked Tony’s hand when he pet her. Or when she attempts to look into the kitchen where we were, because maybe next time she will take a step inside.
The things I have learned about puppy mills the past couple years, would send chills down your body. According to the Humane Society of the United States, there are over 10,000 puppy mills in our country! How do we stop this horrible abuse? It’s impossible unless everyone does their part.
Never ever buy a dog from a puppy mill. Share this message. Friends don’t let friends buy from puppy mills! If they have no buyers for their animals, hopefully they will close.
Breanna is a beautiful, sweet young dog. She didn’t deserve what life has given her. And she didn’t deserve to have her tail docked. That’s right. They cut off her tail! I don’t know why and I shutter to think how!
I can already tell, that Bree is going to be an awesome dog when she learns that she can trust people now. Bree will be available for adoption in a couple months.– Grace
5/4/23 – Lenny’s rescuer contacted me after picking up Lenny from the hospital where he had his surgery. She was very concerned about the wound left after the surgery. We decided to have Lenny seen by Dr. Zalac at Orion Animal Hospital. Fortunately, we were able to get Lenny in yesterday. Lenny’s rescuer was so very pleased with the attention she and Lenny got. The doctor removed the plastic that had been put over the wound and cleaned it. Dr. Z also showed Jody how to clean the wound at home and gave her some supplies, including a soft cone. The doctor advised to also keep him in t shirts. She was also given more pain meds and advised if the wound doesn’t start to shrink in size in a week or two, she should return for follow up. She also advised to change the litter to ‘newspaper’. Jody was so appreciative of the time spent to explain everything to her. Dr. Z said that cats are very good at healing abscess wounds even though it looks massive. Paws crossed that it closes as everyone hopes. 5/3/23 – Their rescuer is a retired widow who realized there were 9 homeless cats in her neighborhood. So far, she has trapped who she thinks is the masculine culprit to the population — Big Daddy — and Olivia, Sandy, and Pepper. 4 Paws was thankful to have been contacted so that we could play a role in making sure more babies aren’t born. They were all taken to All About Animals in Flint for their spay/neuter, rabies vaccine, and flea/parasite treatment. – diana.
5/3/23 – Maize was rescued by a 4 paws 1 heart friend. He was having an issue around his nose. The skin is raw and the area is hairless. He went to one of our partner doctors who examined him and treated Maize with medication. He had already been neutered and vaccinated but has not been adopted as yet. 5/2/23 – Missy was thrown outside after her elderly owner died. She showed up pregnant at the home of a kind homeowner who took her in. Missy had her babies, Daisy, Willow, Basil, and Tank, just before Easter and we were contacted for help. The family was willing to care for the new family and find great homes but they were unable to cover all of the vet care. Thankfully, we can help and everyone has their appointment to be tested, vaccinated, and spayed/neutered in June. May God Bless the Rescuers and the hard-working vet staffs who work at the low-cost clinics dedicated to reducing the overpopulation of animals. I don’t know what we would do without All About Animals Rescue, Humane Society of St. Clair (SNAP), The Paws Clinic, and Comfort’s Place. – diana
