The hardest part of rescuing is saying goodbye especially when they are one of the animals you really bonded with. December 2017, and three days before Christmas, this baby approximately 6 months old, was brought into my previous job after being found by a good samaritan. He was on the brink of death because he somehow wound up trapped in a garage in the dead of winter with no food, water, or an escape. There was nothing left to him other than fur and bones. He was frozen to the point his temperature and blood sugar did not register because they were to low for a thermometer to read. The shelter/animal control at the time was going to euthanize, so I asked to have him transferred into my care so he could be given a chance. 4 Paws 1 Heart was there to fund all of his medical needs and that night I brought him home. David Jenio and I kept him warm, fed, hydrated, and loved around the clock. It took several days for Jack Frost aka Blizzard to walk, regulate his temp, and swallow properly.

After many months we found him the perfect home with friends Ann Kist and Lou Kist. They loved him unconditionally and he knew it. His new name became Noodles.

Yesterday Ann brought him to our doctors because he wasn’t feeling well and declining fast. On ultrasound he had large masses throughout his intestinal area and at only 6 years old he was diagnosed with suspected intestinal lymphoma. It was a heartbreaking goodbye, but I was able to hold him one last time and tell him how much he meant to me. I’m glad to have been there at the beginning and at the end.. I gave him a kiss from Dave and his mom held him during his last moments. Thank you Ann and Lou for being the best kitty parents to Noodles. Rest peacefully sweet boy.. 8/7/23 – And, speaking of veterinary hospitals — our friends at Orion Animal Hospital contacted me to see if we could help a cat with a severe respiratory infection who was found under a car the morning of 7/22 and brought into the hospital by the rescuer. Bennie not only needed treatment for the infection first but also needed the ‘usual’ testing, vaccinations, and neuter. We took on the medical care and a staff member took on the responsibility of finding an adopter and fostering. Here is Bennie the morning he was saved and now after recovering. 8/7/23 – There are so many cats and kittens on the streets needing to be spayed/neutered and vaccinated. The over population has resulted in a huge back up in the many low-cost clinics like All About Animals, The Paws Clinic, Humane Society of St. Clair, and Comfort’s Place. This results in the population growing even greater in that a feline cat can become pregnant at just 4 months old and have 3 litters a year. Also, many ‘standard’ vets will not spay/neuter a cat earlier than 6 months and by then a female could have already had one litter and be on her way to having another. And, when we get a request to help with more than two cats with one person, it is necessary to try to get into a low-cost clinic because of cost. In just the past 2 weeks we’ve been working with rescuers involved in 3 ‘hoarding’ situations not to mention those mamas found on the streets with their babies. I’m proud of the relationship we have with our veterinary hospitals and thankful for the help they give us in doing their best to get the animals treated when we get a request for help. These 3 babies are recent rescues who were just spayed/neutered and vaccinated at The Paws Clinic in Taylor. Max (the black guy) started sneezing and coughing shortly after his visit so he will be going to Orion Animal Hospital for further treatment.

He was found by a co worker with no identification wandering the streets hungry and thin. 4 Paws 1 Heart offered to cover his check up, vax, and neutering. We are hoping to get him into a shelter soon so he can be adopted. Thank you for your support for Animals like Eddie. Gina

8/6/23 – Another poor soul found on the streets with a severe upper respiratory. Because of the severity of the infection, we authorized her to go to one of our partner vets where she could get quickly treated. The doctor there thought she might need to have an eye removed. Her follow up appointment was with another of our great vets who determined that her eye was healing, had a scar but would not need removal. She has now found her furever home and will be loved and cared for unlike so many others. – diana

8/6/23 – This is Queenie. She was dropped off at a home where the person was known to be a cat foster, Jennifer. The person who found the cat said she had found her in an ‘unsafe situation’. Jennifer contacted us because the cat Queenie appeared to have something wrong with her mouth. She was covered in an oily substance that she’d been cleaning off with baby wipes. She had also picked all the burrs and “chunks of something” out of her fur and brushed her. Because, Jennifer was not an an area where we have partner veterinary hospitals, Queenie was taken to a nearby by and we offered to help with the treatment. Here is Jennifer’s update:

“I want to thank you for your generous donation yesterday toward her dental surgery. Poor baby lost 8 teeth in just one section of her mouth. One tooth had been knocked sideways completely and was hanging only by a root. They are pretty sure this was all due to an injury. The rest of her teeth are healthy and strong.- Jennifer”

8/6/23 – I know many people get tired of seeing posts about abused and injured animals but we believe it’s important for those not personally involved in ‘rescue’ to be aware of what goes on in the real world of stray animals. This is Orange Kid. It was in late May when a 4p1h friend contacted us about this situation. Here is a portion of her e mail:

“This cat was dumped at my house and the idiots upstairs who smoke hooka decided to keep him as entertainment.. they let him in and out 3 days .. my outside cats beating the crap out of him and also children chasing him all over .. 1 kicked him in front of me.. they kept going back and forth on releasing this cat to me for 3 days.. he stinks of hooka smoke.. and is traumatized, he is still sweet though out of this whole situation.. please help vetting this orange kid for neuter and vaccine, combo and treatment please if needed.. they allowed me to feed the cat so I slipped him a gabapentin.. they thought the cat was not feeling well so they finally agreed to release him to me today and rescue friends have offered to transport him to the vet and to help this orange kid mentally heal he needs to decompress after this nightmare but he needs vetting please”

We absolutely covered everything for Orange Kid and pray that he will find his furever loving family but for now he is in good hands. – diana

8/6/23 – Orange showed up in a colony cared for by a kind woman. He showed signs of being ill and she took him into All About Animals to be examined and vetted. All About Animals was able to vaccinate and neuter him but also found that the cause of his emaciation was a severe case of stomatitis. He is scheduled for a total removal of his teeth on September 5 and in the meantime has received medication. – diana

8/6/23 – Then, later in the evening, I received a text about sweet Warren. He had been to hospital twice, most recently this past Tuesday when he had surgery at the emergency hospital for a prolapsed rectum. He hadn’t had a bowel movement and his rescuer and new mom and dad were concerned. Warren was brought into Advanced Animal Emergency last night where our dear friend, Dr. Maria, was on duty. Poor little Warren was severely impacted and the doctor was concerned that surgery would again be necessary. I approved whatever was needed for this sweet boy and this morning Warren was given the all clear. Dr. Maria was able to clear his bowels without surgery and he was ready to go at 7 am. I don’t know what we, our rescuers, and, importantly, our fur orphans would do without some of the amazing hospitals who work so closely with 4 Paws 1 Heart. – diana

8/6/23 – And it’s not over and I haven’t even gone through the dozen e mails requesting help that came through since yesterday morning. First, was Missy. She was attacked by a dog near the Make A Difference Animal Rescue Shelter. His wounds were deep and we were called in to help with an emergency visit. Unfortunately, we have had several serious cases in the past few weeks and we could only offer to help with a portion of the total vet bill. Missy was seen at an emergency hospital and received stitches and medication.
