Here is the update on Bobbi from her neuro consult today at Dogwood Veterinary Referral Center. After Dr. Galle did his examination of Bobbi and going over the reports from both OVRS and Dr. Z and speaking with Auntie Marjorie his feeling is Bobbi’s symptoms are more in line with Peripheral Vestibular Disease then a stroke, brain tumor, brain inflammation or cancer. Peripheral Vestibular Disease is usually caused by ear or inner ear infection and comes on very suddenly, which is what happened with Bobbi. In rare cases it can be caused by a tumor in the vestibular system. In most cases the cat will make a full, or near full recovery over time. In some cases they recover to a point of being functional like Bobbi is now, but no more jumping high or swinging from the chandeliers! So for now, it’s a wait and see for another 3 weeks. Bobbi has been off her steroids for 1wk so we shall see how she does over the next 3. If she makes any improvement or basically stays the same, then the vestibular disease will be the assumed diagnosis. If for any reason she starts to decline then more diagnostics will be needed such as a MRI and Spinal Tap. So that’s where we are with Bobbi right now. The temps have been brutal and I’m sure we are all praying that the warnings about the ‘snowmageddon’ this week is exaggerated but one way or the other, we are just so very thankful for the many amazing people who continue to contact us for medical assistance because they cared enough to save an animal who was wandering the streets. I’ve mentioned earlier that we have committed to assisting with a number of cat community projects and here are a few that will either be adopted into a home, returned to their community, or placed in a barn. Meet Sheridan 1, 2, and 3 who will be getting ‘the works’. They will be tested, vaccinated, spayed/neutered and treated for lice, mites, and fleas. And, once they have been treated and given a chance to decompress, their caretaker/rescuer will be looking for their furever homes. 1/30/22 – Meet Naomi, A very compassionate mail lady found her as a stray and noticed a severe injury. It took some time, but the kind woman didn’t give up and was finally able to get this kitty to a hospital where they assessed her and provided antibiotics. Our wonderful board member, Dee was able to take her for a more permanent foster situation and 4 paws 1 heart has offered to back her medical care. It takes a village. Naomi was transported to Moore Veterinary Hospital for continued medical/diagnostics on Friday. Dr. Henry confirmed the Achilles Tendon is ruptured, bone is exposed, the tibia and femur are not connected most likely secondary to the traumatic injury, and Amputation of the rear leg is recommended. 1/27/22 – Garfield and Sky are two strays who were brought in from the outside during these brutal winter days. The rescuer is on a fixed income and although she can take care of their shelter and future needs, she needed assistance to have them tested, vaccinated, spayed/neutered. 1/27/22 – Although these are not current cases, I feel compelled to at least put their faces out there so our supporters know the many animals we have assisted during the pandemic. All of the cats shown have been rescued from the streets, most of whom turned out to be very adoptable and domesticated. During the pandemic many people lost their jobs, their homes, and, sadly, their lives and many animals (especially cats) were left behind to fend for themselves. Here are some of the many we’ve helped with vaccines, testing, vaccinating, and addressing other medical issues as needed, such as upper respiratory infections, fleas, ticks, and mites. 1/26/22 – Because of the generosity of our many supporters, we have been able to commit to helping several individuals who care for cat communities. In many cases it’s not just a matter of TNR because many of the cats trapped turn out to be very domesticated — either victims of abandonment or escape. Meet Creamsicle, Chaplin, Falafel, Spider Monkey (who may be pregnant), and Toupee. Two of the cats have already been re-homed and the others are still being temperament tested. Any cats being re-homed will also be tested for FIV/Felv, and vaccinated for distemper. We will always take care of fleas and deworming no matter if the the cat will be returned to its community or adopted out.
