REST IN PEACE, SWEET TUXY

10/12/22 – It was about 2 months ago when we were contacted about this beautiful cat who showed up on the porch of a loving couple who already had been taking care of outdoor cats and who had a special needs kitty in her home. Tuxy had severe diarrhea and vomiting. The rescuer took Tuxy to a vet who treated the vomiting. Tuxy seemed to get better for awhile but when the severity started again, the rescuer contacted us. We started Tuxy out with being seen at Orion Animal Hospital. She was again giving medication for the severe diarrhea but shortly after, the severity increased and Tuxy was seen again. At that time, an ultra sound was done and a large mass was discovered on Tuxy’s intestines. Her red blood cell was high but her white blood cell count was off the charts. The doctor strongly suspected cancer but couldn’t confirm it without a biopsy. The doctor believed the mass was the cause of the severe vomiting and diarrhea. I spoke with the doctor who explained the options, which had also been discussed with the rescuer. The options were surgery with a very poor prognosis or steroids. The rescuer decided on the steroids. Tuxy loved to snuggle and soaked up all of the love she could get. But then, approximately 3 weeks after starting steroid treatment, she peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge at her new, loving home. Once again, we all find some comfort knowing that Tuxy wasn’t left to die a horrible death on the streets and though she appeared to have had a tough life, in the end she knew people cared.

The importance of having the funds available is critical to our mission. Individual donations and fundraisers are our only sources of revenue. We are blessed to have so many generous supporters but, like so many of the other animal advocacy groups in our communities, we can’t deny the serious impacts the virus and inflation has had on the stray animals. Animals abandoned by their owners has increased — anyone who has bought cat/dog food in the past months, can attest to the difficulty in not only feeding one’s family but also feeding the family’s pets. The stray population has increased because of closures (temporary and permanent) of veterinary hospitals and now understandable increased costs. So thank you for caring and remember that there is still time to double your donation during our $2,000 Sweetest Day Match. – diana.
