A testament to trap/neuter/release from one of our friends. Just to clarify, in the process of TNR many kittens have been found and determined to be adoptable and thus found forever homes. In other cases, many of the unaltered cats were at one time pets who were either lost or thrown out. ~ diana
“Good morning Diana! How is little Blitzen doing with her paw? I pray for her and that it can be saved. Do you realize that other then the 4 kittens I found in the rain (the ones that all died from fip) from my neighbors yard, there were no new kittens born in my neighborhood this year?!?! Thanks to 4 Paws 1 Heart and the ones I got fixed before I met you (about 8 of them). Thank you for all your help in getting all these sweethearts spay and neutered. Its the first time in the 5 years I’ve been here that there weren’t at least 5-7 litters of kittens born on my street under decks! We’ve made amazing headway and have made a huge difference in my area preventing homeless animals giving birth to more homeless animals. Three of us on my street now have heated warming mats in shelters and heated feeding and water bowls. So the remaining ferals will all be warm and toasty and their water and food will not be frozen! Yay!!! The mats and bowls were all donated by the couple that adopted the one-eyed cat, Harriet. She is thriving and doing amazing! I’m so grateful and blessed to have gotten involved in rescue; it’s the most rewarding thing Ive ever done in my life. And I’ve met the most caring, giving people, yourself and Tony included! Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year, and I hope I get a foster soon! Much love, Dee”

Keller – His Eyes Were Removed But He Can See Love
12/21/14 – More Good Morning Cuteness from our Keller! Many thanks to Pat for taking such good care of our boy. For our new friends, here is Keller’s story. And although it was necessary for him to have both eyes removed, he is having the best life ever. Here he is when he first came to us and today wishing all of our friends a Merry Christmas:
8/11/13 Someone heard his cry outside… Imagine being lost, alone, scared, hungry, terrified, and not able to see. Well… This kitten about 10 weeks old was found with an abnormality to both eyes leaving him without sight and more than vulnerable to the dangers surrounding him like cars, etc. When the good Samaritan called me because they wanted to know if “4 paws 1 heart” would help, I said yes, and met her in a parking lot where she delivered this scared helpless kitten to me… He is now being treated medically by us and he will go see a specialist soon. If there is someone who can foster him on a temporary basis for me please contact me asap. He is a “special needs” kitten and he will need daily eye meds until we know more. He is using the litter box, eating and drinking fine and in a small spare room. He loves to be held and he loves attention, and he is giving little kisses of appreciation. A true little angel.. Gina

Bricks – Helping Our Rescue Friends
12/20/14 – This sweet 12-14 week-old puppy, who still has his baby teeth, was seen being tossed out on the streets and was rescued by Friends of Scooby. He had a broken tooth and an abscess in his jaw and now may have the Parvo Virus. We are always happy to help our rescue friends with the medical bills that so often can be overwhelming. Please say a few prayers for Bricks. ~ diana
12/24/14 Update: After four days of struggling and, at times worsening, Bricks now seems to be on the road to recovery. Follow her story on the Friends of Scooby facebook page. ~ diana

Katniss Everdeen – Still Looking For That Perfect Home
12/18/14 – We have disappointing news about what we thought would be Katniss’ forever home. First let me say that the family chosen would have been the absolute perfect family who could give Katniss everything she would ever need. And, although Katniss and the other family pet got along very well during their two long visits (you can see that from the recently-posted photo), it became apparent that Katniss was not a good match for the 14 year old family pet and we could not put either dog in jeopardy. As we’ve said before, Katniss is very smart and is a great, sweet dog. But as with humans, the outside appearance is not always indicative of what is going on inside. There is no doubt that Katniss was abused and for how long, we don’t know. We do know that she was in that small carrier long enough to have impacted three discs in her spine. We do know that when she gets too much attention, she gets overwhelmed. And now we know that Katniss is definitely a dominant dog. This doesn’t mean she can’t have a playmate but it does mean that the playmate needs to hold her own. Remember, Katniss probably went her entire short life getting no attention or when she did, it was abusive. When she gets overwhelmed from too much stimulation, she growls and needs to get away from the stimulant. A human who understands the situation can react properly but an animal, especially one who can be dominated as in the case of this family’s dog, cannot. Katniss enjoyed playing with her and she wants to have a friend but when the playing got too rough and Katniss got overwhelmed, it put everyone in a position of being cautious and deciding that under the current make up of the household, we would be setting Katniss up to fail. The family is heartbroken, as are we. The man of the household was the first man Katniss ever seemed to trust totally — in fact the first time they met, she literally rolled on her back and let him rub her belly. So, once again, we are looking for that perfect home for our girl Katniss Everdeen. Gina will be going through all of the current applications again but we would be happy to take in more applications. Again, Katniss needs a loving home who can provide her with love, understanding, and discipline. The family should not have any young children or pets easily dominated or larger than Katniss; dogs who could pose a danger to her weakened spine. Katniss is absolutely on a journey and we know there is that special person/household who will join her on the next leg of her journey. Contact me at [email protected] if you would like an application.
Joy Has Her First Leg Surgery
12/17/14 –
12/17/14 – Joy Update: Here is Joy recovering at home after her TPLO and luxating patella surgery on her back leg today. She is all snuggled in with her stuffed animal and blankie. Joy thanks all of her friends for their prayers and positive energy. Gina
p.s. – I forgot to mention that Joy’s foster parents begged us to adopt her and, of course, we said “YES”. Not only is the mom a veterinarian but both mom and dad have taken such good care of her, taking her for physical therapy to Dr Tari Kern, and conscientiously doing whatever else she needed. Of course, 4 Paws 1 Heart will continue to pay for her physical therapy and pain management treatment and the surgery for her other back leg as we have committed. We thank Dr. Kern of Pawsitive Steps Rehabilitation & Therapy for Pets for all of her help and generosity in treating Joy on her road to recovery, and, of course, her new mom and dad. ~ diana

Katniss Everdeen – Finds Her Forever Home and Her Forever Family
12/16/17 – There are not enough words to describe how happy we are to report that Katniss Everdeen is now in her forever home. She chose this wonderful family to be her own, and they are committed to offering her a life she is so deserving of. We will never know the extent of the pain, suffering, and trauma she endured during the first chapter of her life, but we are certain she will never experience abuse again.
Last night was the first night in her new home and here she is resting with her new buddy, “Co Co”. As you can see they are both very content. I could go on and on about how happy we are, but let me just say that I truly believe in fate. I believe that these animals come to us for a reason, and it’s beyond rewarding to be a part of their new path. Each and every one of them becomes a piece of my heart, and they impact all of whom they surround during their recovery.
I want to personally thank all of you that were involved in this journey with Katniss Everdeen, and I want to especially thank her foster mommy, Carrie, for helping her during the most critical period of her transition. The patience, understanding, and commitment it took was beyond what most realize. The updated photos don’t show the nightmares, fears, cries, anxiety, and physical pain that was imprinted on Katniss prior to us taking her in. Carrie literally put several weeks of her life on hold to encourage a positive start this beautiful rescued soul was so desperate for.
Thank you to our supporters, applicants, and of course the new family that will continue to shower Katniss with love and kindness throughout her new journey… Gina
