1/1/20 – Happy New Decade to our over 13,000 Friends. I know most people make resolutions in the new year but the Board of 4 Paws 1 Heart has already resolved, back in 2010, to reduce the number of abandoned/stray/abused animals by funding medical treatment and thereby helping to find forever homes. For 2020, our prayer is that all of the work done by 4p1h and the many other rescuers in our State will result in less cats and dogs being born alone on the streets. 2019 was a very tough year with an unbelievable number of heart worm cases, broken limbs, eye removals, and not too mention the spay/neuter of any animal we touched.
Once again, we sincerely thank every person who has rescued, all of our financial supporters — small businesses and individuals, and the many great veterinarians who continue to work with us. We wish all of our friends a 2020 filled with much love, laughter, good health and many doggie/kitty kisses, Here is one of those animals who because of the Village will have an amazing life. He was left behind by his owners after they moved from their home. – diana

Syrio – Had His Cleft Palate Surgery and is Doing Great
12/31/19 – Syrio Update. Syrio had a cleft palate and was surrendered by his breeder to a veterinary hospital. He also had a broken jaw. The generous veterinary staff covered the medical needs for his jaw and asked if we could pay for his cleft palate surgery. After waiting for him to gain enough weight, he had his surgery yesterday and here is the update from the veterinary technician who took him in and who will be his forever mom.
“Syrio’s surgery went well. He is will be staying the night. I will pick him up tomorrow! Thank you everyone for all your prayers, love and support. It means more than you will ever know. — Amber”
Thank you to our many supporters for making miracles happen. – diana

Buster – Found With Entropion In Both Eyes
12/30/19 – In two days we will be entering a whole new decade and there is still time to make a end of the year donation which will be used to save the abandoned, stray, and abused like Buster.
On December 20, 2019 I received a frantic phone call from a kind man who had rescued a cat who had showed up at his door. The cat could hardly see out of his eyes. The man took Buster to have him neutered, vaccinated, and to see what was wrong with his eyes. It turned out the Buster had entropion in both eyes. Entropion refers to inversion of an eyelid margin resulting in hair (eyelashes) rubbing against the cornea. It will result in blindness and is very painful. The poor rescuer was beside himself because as a cat dad he knew he had to help poor Buster but didn’t have the money. When I told him we would pay for the surgery, he literally cried. Buster had his surgery last week Monday and the Riverside Animal Hospital was absolutely wonderful. They took photos for me and called after his surgery was complete. He is doing good and because of YOU we can give these animals who are suffering on the street a second chance at life. ~ diana

Jasper – Found on the Side of the Road Unable To Walk – Update
Jasper – Found on the Side of the Road Unable to Walk
12/29/19 – Your support can make a difference for little ones like Jasper who was found on the side of the road last night. Jasper is unable to walk but we don’t know why just yet. He is at the emergency hospital at this time awaiting x-rays. Please say a little prayer that we will be able to help him. Because of other animals in the household, he spent the night in a box in a garage and we thank his rescuers for not turning their backs on this kitten. We will keep you posted. diana

Lucy (aka Cookie) – Update
It was March, 2016 when Lucy (aka Cookie) was surrendered to Gina at the veterinary hospital where she worked. Her family had dumped her in a parking lot in a very dangerous area in Detroit. She followed the disgusting people to their nearby relatives’ home and for three weeks she lived on the porch, refusing to leave. The relatives decided to drop her off at the emergency hospital where Gina took over. By that time, she couldn’t walk due to an injury. She had a huge bruise on her leg, she wasn’t spayed or vaccinated, and had trauma to her back and neck. She was miserable for several weeks while Gina and 4 Paws 1 Heart assisted in her recovery. After 7 months with Gina, the perfect forever home was found. Our wonderful friends, Jean and Phil, came to our house to meet her and fell in love. Now Lucy is living the life of luxury. She lives on a lake, has a pontoon boat, has made trips to Florida, and is hugely loved. You can read Lucy’s story on our website. – diana

Miura – After Being Rescued With Her Siblings, His Spay Surgery Resulted in Complications
12/27/19 – Ocso, Sally, and Miura were all born to a feral mom. The mom was trapped, spayed, and released but her kittens were rescued with hopes of finding forever homes. We were contacted to back the kittens’ medical needs. The three went for their pre-spay/neuter appointment and received their basic vaccines; all were healthy and an appointment was made for their spay/neuters. On Monday, December 23, the surgeries were completed but, unfortunately, Miura had complications. He was treated as long as possible at the day practice but because the hospital was to be closed for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Miura had to be taken to our partner emergency hospital. Miura spent the night in the hospital with a high fever and a low red cell blood count but by the next day he was able to go home. As with humans, there are no guarantees with surgeries–things can happen. We are just thankful to have a great relationship with the emergency hospital doctors who always come through for us. ~ diana
Ryan and Judas – Ryan Recovered from Panleukopenia and Judas Found His Forever Home
12/26/19 – Happy Updates! I posted about Ryan and Judas this past October. Both had been pulled from a local municipal shelter. Ryan was just a newborn who lost two siblings and whose mom was hit and killed by a vehicle. After fighting other illnesses and parasites, Ryan contracted panleukopenia. After 12 days in the hospital, and 30 days in quarantine, Ryan is now out and about and doing great.
Judas is believed to be 14 years old. The poor guy was emaciated and after blood work was done, he was found to be in relatively good health. The challenge was to ‘fatten’ him up–carefully. The good news is that Judas was adopted this past Monday. We were thankful to be able to help in both of these cases – diana

Dash – The Little Guy Who May Lose His Leg Because of Neglect by a Backyard Breeder
“Dash” Update
He is a very good patient. In fact, he was so relaxed during his morning bandage change he fell asleep. He had lots of attention the last couple days, and he is a trooper throughout the cleanings. Your prayers are working and his foot is slowly getting better. Baby steps of improvement is all I care about. The pics are too graphic to show and we don’t know what the cause was, but we’re hopeful. Tendons and bone are exposed on the underside of his foot. I’ll post another update soon.♡Gina
Mister – RIP – His Injuries Were Just Too Great
12/24/19 – It is with a heavy heart and tears flowing that I must report that Mister was allowed to cross the rainbow bridge yesterday evening. Mister had surgery last week and his anal glands were removed (See earlier postings). He was kept over the weekend for observation and early yesterday morning it was determined that there were further complications – Mister could not move his bowels and the feces was blocked. Without giving more complicated details, the doctor advised that the colon or small intestines could be removed but there was no guarantee Mister’s quality of life would be good. Each option would result in other issues. After much discussion with the doctor and the rescuer and considering Mister’s age and what he has gone through already, it was decided to let him go. His rescuer and caretaker over the past 3 weeks wrote me the following:
“I spent a bit of time with him before he went . He went in my arms and with kisses all the way . It was peaceful. I hope you have peace of mind, diana, You made the right choice; he was tired, I saw it in his eyes.”
May God be with the rescuers. RIP Mister. You had many scars on your body and we don’t know the challenges you faced over the past 12+ years but you are now free to run, hiss, and play. – diana
