Stephan James – Found Under a Propane Exchange Rack — Very Frightened

8/2/20 – Another life saved by the Village. – dianastephan james 8:8:20

“Please meet….another St Clair Shores homeless kitten off the streets….Stephan James…. Our little purr machine with a side of hiss..

I was eating my lunch at work on Wednesday and my cell phone rings – I don’t pick up calls of numbers I do not recognize but something told me to do so….. and I’m so glad I did. A woman, named Stephanie was frantic talking to me about this kitten she found in front of a drug store under the propane exchange rack. She called rescues and no one could help and she won’t leave it and didn’t know what to do…she started to cry… She said she saw my name on facebook and asked if I could help. I told her to hold on and I called my husband on my desk phone. He was close to home so he went and got a carrier, went to the drug store (local) and with super teamwork and super speedy catching skills of Stephanie -the kitten was in the carrier and on the way to our house.

The kitten was super scared, super hissy and super skinny….3 days later we only have to work on the super skinny part. He has a recent chunk out of his ear, and a scratch on his head but in good health it seems. He did throw up foreign items that he ate for food, pieces of mulch, and cedar greenery….broke my heart.

Thank you Stephanie for not turning your back on this helpless animal. My hubby (aka Foster Daddy) who stepped up without hesitation and 4 Paws 1 Heart that is backing his medical so he can go on and find his happily ever after.

Please help 4 Paws 1 Heart during these difficult times when fundraising events have been canceled due the covid pandamic’ www.4paws1heart.org/donations dee”

Kitty of the Corn – Dumped in a Field to Die

8/4/20 – The “Kitty of the Corn” was dumped at a very kind couple’s house. The very young kitten had a huge, horrible abscess on her neck and although the couple tried to find a doctor who would prescribe antibiotics, all, understandably, wanted to personally see the cat. The couple has not been working regularly because of the virus and contacted us for help. Kitty was taken to one of our partner vets who confirmed that this was a very nasty infection that kept growing. Part of the dark spot (as you can see in the photo) was old tissue, hair, and dirt. The doctor was able to ‘rip’ that off pretty quickly, cleaned it, and stitched it up. She then was tested (negative) for FIV/FeLV, and given basic vaccines. When she weighs enough, she will be spayed. This morning the rescuer sent me a message saying that “Kitty” is doing great and will have her stitches out in two weeks and then scheduled for spaying. “Kitty is right back at being lovey and playful”. And, she has obviously found her furever home. Just as a side note, I don’t usually share some of the injury photos we get but I think it’s important for the general public to know of the kinds of injuries and illnesses these animals have been facing, more in the past five months, than I’ve ever seen in a similar period over the past 10 years. I thank God every day for the many people who rescue and provide furever, loving homes, and to our friends who are so kitty of the corn kitty of the corn infection kitty of the corn w:brandy werczynskigenerous with their donations. – diana

Jefferson – Found in the Middle of Jefferson Ave. – Unable to Move

8/3/20 – Once again, it was a busy weekend. On Friday night I received a call about a cat found in the middle of Jefferson, near the spillway, in Harrison Twp., MI. The cat couldn’t move and the finder thought he might have had a broken leg. After being assured the cat could be stabilized until morning, we made arrangements to find a vet in the morning. Thankfully the doctors where our co-founder works as a vet tech, squeezed in Jefferson on Saturday morning although they were booked to the max. Here is Gina’s report:

“The doctor looked at him and we did some x rays of the pelvic area. It looks like he sustained an injury to the pelvis causing instability in his hind end. He can carefully stand and he is able to urinate in a shallow tray which is very important. He tested negative for fiv/felv. There are a few abrasions on his legs. He had some elevations in bloodwork so we are doing antibiotics, pain meds, rest, and anti-inflammatory with very close monitoring over the weekend. He might need surgery or he may heal over time. It will be day to day of making sure he will eat, drink, urinate, and have bowel movements. He is neutered and extremely gentle. He was dehydrated and anemic. He was given some fluids under the skin and treated for fleas. The man who saved him is really kind; he literally saved this cat’s life. We need more people like this in the world — unselfish and compassionate.- Gina”

His finder, Doug, will continue to look for Jefferson’s owner. If one isn’t found, he will foster him until he can find a furever home. We will continue to be committed to him just in case he needs further medical. Unfortunately, it seems that every cat we are called about these days has a severe injurty or illness. During this time of no fundraisers, your donations continue to be lifesaving. – diana

Shakira – Update

8/1/20 – Great News!!! Dr. Natalie Zalac and her staff stayed late and Shakira had her surgery last night. And guess what?? Her new mom is on her way now to pick her up. Shakira is recovering like a champ!! 4 paws 1 heart is truly blessed to have such amazing doctors who we can call on.

Two more cases came in last night. I will post on them a little later. One dog is in emergency and another kitty was found in the middle of Jefferson with a broken leg. He’s waiting to be seen by a vet. diana

Shakira – Saved by a 14 Year Old Young Man – She had a Fractured Pelvis and a Herniated Diaphragm

7/31/20 – Prayers and Positive Energy Needed! Shakira is a 2 pound, 6-8 weeks old kitten who was found by a 14 year old young man and his friend. She was very hurt and he brought the kitten home. Mom brought the kitten to a vet who removed a botfly and found, through x-rays, that Shakira had a fractured pelvis and a ruptured herniated diaphragm. Last night I received a message from the mom that Shakira was having difficulty breathing. The emergency hospital said they couldn’t do anything so this morning I contacted one of the best in the business, Dr. Natalie Zalac of Orion Animal Hospital. After explaining the situation, Dr. Z agreed to at least fit Shakira in for a consultation and maybe even surgery, after hours — this while she was totally booked with appointments and walk-ins. The family, upon my direction, took the 45 minute drive immediately to Dr. Z and a little earlier today Dr. Z did call me affirming that Shakira would need surgery and she and some staff members would be staying overtime should we wish to continue. The concern was that because the baby is so small, there was a risk to putting her under. Dr. Z told me that Shakira is the sweetest little thing and was even standing with a broken pelvis. So, with the understanding of the family, I approved the surgery to give this baby a second chance. We are all anxious about the surgery and, I hate to ask, after just asking for Zeus, but if you can afford to donate towards her surgery, it would help immensely. Thank YOU so very much. – diana

Bear – His Owner Died

7/31/20 – On this last day of July, I really can’t explain what the past 4 months have been like for the stray animals being born and left on the streets and the many rescuers (as well as 4p1h) who have been trying to address the many serious issues of an overpopulation of kittens, serious injuries and illnesses, and the difficulty in getting into veterinary hospitals who were either closed or had to have restricted services. I have never been so appreciative of our partner veterinary hospitals and their staffs who have gone above and beyond to fit in our strays along with their regular patients in need of medical care. This past two weeks have been especially daunting.

This is Bear. Last week I received the following message:
“Good morning. My name is Mary. I made a post on Facebook looking for referrals for a Veterinarian who can possibly work with me. I’m on Social Security Disability so I’m on a fixed monthly income. I have a senior cat who is 17 years old. He was my Aunt’s cat but sadly she passed away so I took him in. He needs to be seen right away and treated. I believe he has an abscess tooth and has tried to get it out on his own. He has a big open wound under his chin and it smells horrible. He definitely needs an antibiotic and possibly an extraction. If there’s possibly any information or help you can provide, please send me a message. Thank you so much for your time ❤️ – Mary”

So many animals are abandoned or sent to the municipal shelter when a relative dies and leaves behind a pet so I had to help this kind niece who didn’t turn her back on this beautiful senior cat. Bear did have surgery for the wound under his chin and did have an abscessed tooth removed. He also had blood work to test his vitals before having surgery. He was then treated for the infection and he is now resting comfortably with his new family. Thank you to all of our donors for giving us the resources needed to help these animals who would otherwise die on the streets or in shelters because they have no one else. –

Mouse, Daisy, Boo, Bean, and Eve – Born in a Home Where the Owner Couldn’t Care for Them

7/30/20 – An elderly, disabled man had a male cat and female cat who were not spayed/neutered. Of course, the female got pregnant and had 4 kittens. The man could not handle this and, fortunately, someone stepped in to help. That woman ended up contacting a person, Bonnie, who we’ve helped several times. Bonnie contacted us for help to get the mom, her 3 kittens, and a 1 week-old baby, who had been abandoned, to get tested, examined, vaccinated, and spayed/neutered when ready. We agreed and everyone is scheduled for September 8. Fortunately, for 2 weeks mama nursed the abandoned baby but then stopped. Bonnie continued to bottle feed the baby even though she didn’t much like the nipple. The spayed mom will return to the elderly man and I have been assured that the male will be neutered before that happens. All of the babies will be available for adoption after their September appointment. If you are interested, contact: [email protected] Here is mama, Mouse, her babies — Daisy, Boo, Bean, and Eve (the ‘bottle’ baby’) – diana

Zeus – Home with his Foster Mom

/29/20 – Good News!!! Little Big Boy Zeus is on his way home to his foster home. He was picked up just a little while ago and as I was paying the bill I heard him squealing with happiness. Well, actually he was squealing while he got his face washed–I guess he didn’t much care for that. He’s been eating like a champ and he will be watched over closely. Please continue to pray for this little one. You know if anything changes, we’ll have him right back to the hospital. We are committed to this fighter. Thank you to all who donated and/or said a prayer. We can still use your support but because of all of you we can continue to help those who need us. I’m sure we will get an updated photo soon. – May God Bless our Village. – diana
P.S. Just another bit of information I learned earlier. The box these babies were in was covered. I had wondered why they couldn’t get out. Thankfully a wonderful woman who cares for cats in the neighborhood heard the weak rustling when she passed by the box and got Zeus to safety. Hopefully the same fate as the others kittens and mom will come to those subhumans who did this. Also, the case has been reported to the City’s animal control.

Zeus – More to the Story

7/29/20 – A friend of 4p1h just added more to the story. I was told that the finder of Zeus actually learned that the mother was purposely killed and the killers bragged about putting the kittens to “bake in the sun”. Unfortunately, that is what happened but before Zeus succumbed to the heat and the fleas and maggots, a kind woman passed by the box and saved Zeus. I know we all believe that these people need to be punished but, unfortunately, this is Detroit and we all know very well, that Animal Control and the police have much bigger issues than poor cats. I’m disgusted by this latest news and can only sincerely hope that whoever is responsible for this will meet their karma sooner than later. -diana

7/29/20 – Zeus update. The good news is that Zeus had a blood transfusion yesterday, was put on fluids, and has made it through the night. The doctor called me this morning and reported that this “little sweetheart” is not yet out of the woods but is eating good and an important medical number (sorry for my ignorance) which was ‘9’ when he got to the emergency, is now at ’22’; normal for a kitten is ’25’. Zeus is only 1.1 lbs. so you can imagine how difficult of a struggle it has been for him and the doctors. Zeus will be kept in the hospital through the day and I will talk with the doctor a little later to determine our next step. We do know that he has a great foster lined up who is experienced with at-risk kittens and took him in the night he got out of the first emergency hospital. But we will do what is best. We have learned over the years that, when possible, the love and care in an experienced home can make the difference to get us over the finish line. Thank you so very much to all of you who have donated and prayed. I will keep you all informed. Your DONATIONS and PRAYERS are still needed, we are less than half way to what we thinK Zeus’ bill will be. Anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated.- dianazeus 7:29:20
