Remember Princess with a Broken Leg

8/20/2012 – Princess is a female, mixed breed, 6-month-old puppy.  She was brought into the Animal Urgent and Critical Care Center with her rear leg broken and requiring surgery.  4 Paws 1 Heart will be paying for the surgery which will require amputation.  This puppy is so lovable I couldn’t stand it!!  She almost went home with me!  ~ Gina

Update 9/2/2012  Princess’ leg was amputated by Dr. Venet.   She is doing great and we think that the good doctor might want to give Princess her permanent home. If not, she will  be released to Kim, Warren Animal Control Officer, who rescued her. ~ diana

Update 9/22/2012   Princess was adopted by Dr. Venet and is happy and doing great.  She has adapted very well after her surgery. ~ diana

Hercules Update — Doing Great!

Hi everyone!
I just wanted to give you an update.  I am doing great!  I had a very busy week this week and it started at Red Oaks Dog Park & Waterpark in Madison Heights on Sunday.  At the end of the summer, they open the place up for dogs!  It was so much fun!  I met many new friends there too.  We ran together in the dog park.  Later on, we got to go into the wave pool to swim and play there.  The pool time was for dogs only – the people just got to watch!  A couple people noticed my handicap, but mostly they saw how happy I am and how well I can get around and play.  I asked my folks to provide some photos for you to see too.  This week also included my rally class, hydrotherapy and rehab exercises too.  I am very excited about being a guest tomorrow night at the Angels Supporting  Animals event benefiting 4 Paws 1 Heart Rescue.  I will get to see old friends there and meet new ones too.  Maybe you can come by to say hi also!
Many kisses,
Hercules (and Dr. K)

Heros for Homeless Animals

4 Paws 1 Heart is once again happy to be able to send some medical dollars to Heroes for Homeless Animals. This was one heck of a rescue. Thank God this poor female will never have to have another litter. I can’t imagine what would have happened to the new puppies let alone all of the ones she gave birth to before and were taken by God knows who and for what purpose. Thank you again to all of our rescue friends who do so much! ~ diana

“Urgent call came to us about an emaciated mama dog spotted stray in a field on the eastside of Detroit. After scoping out the area, it was discovered that the mama dog had 8 babies in a field. Upon arrival back to the scene, the puppies had “magically” been moved underneath a collapsed garage. In order to save them, the group of rescuers crawled under the garage and scooped the 8 (approx 6 week old) puppies to safety. Neighbors in the area tried to walk off with puppies and stated that they were feeding the mama! They stated that she always looks this way every time she has puppies. She has had 2 litters just this year!Heroes offered to take them into rescue. Mama is in very rough condition, but the babies all seem healthy other than being full of worms most likely. They will all be seeing our vet tomorrow.”

Hercules Update from Dr. Tari Kern

HERCULES UPDATE FROM DR. TARI KERN (also of Pawsitive Steps Rehabilitation & Therapy for Pets): Hercules wanted to say hi to everyone. He has become quite the personality over the last month and is enjoying all the silly puppy things that

he should have several months back. He pesters the cats at home and stole a treat from the counter (which means he was up on his rear legs to do it!). He is much stronger for his walks and is up to 1 mile daily for the long one! He also did his 1st trip up a complete flight of stairs (we haven’t gone down yet though). His rehab continues to progress and I have to get more creative to challenge him with exercises. The farmer’s market visits this month have been really fun for him because there is food everyone and lots of people. He is really looking forward to the big fundraiser next weekend for 4 Paws 1 Heart because he wants to show everyone how well his is doing!
More next week !Dr. Kern and Hercules

Skeletal Dogs found in Abandoned Home

Skeleton Dogs with Heros For Homeless

Heroes for Homeless Animals Received a call from a lady who discovered three skeletal dogs in an abandoned home. Heroes couldn’t refuse and is now looking for fosters. 4 Paws 1 Heart is grateful for all of our local rescues and we’re happy to send some medical dollars to help these poor neglected souls. ~ diana

Jimmy the Stray

James (a friend of mine) was trying to help this stray, emaciated, terrified, young dog. After a police chase and being on the run for 2 hours, James managed to get the stray in a fenced-in area behind a building in the neighborhood. He called me and I went to help leash the dog who was tucked in the shrubs scared to death. The alternative was the police showing up again and the dog ending up at the county animal control shelter. We named him Jimmy. An update to follow soon. ~Gina

Sweetpea Looking Good!!

From our Friends at NBS Animal Rescue :  “Sweetpea is doing VERY well – he was getting so fuzzy that it was time for him to get a profesional groom!! He got the fur on his little toes trimmed so he doesn’t slip and slide on the wood floors, his body fuzz was trimmed so that the hair regrowing where the maggots were living blends in with the rest of his furry fuzz, and his fuzzy wuzzy face and ears were trimmed up too!!

He pranced out of the grooming salon and down the streets of Royal Oak like the celebrity that he is (Did you see him on Fox 2 News yesterday demonstrating the Pet Oxygen Masks???) and hopped right in the car to go home.

Sweetpea is 100% healed from his neck drain tube, his mass removal surgeries, is finished with his antibiotics and will go back in for a blood test this week to see where his levels are at. He’s amazing with people, kids, cats, and dogs – has gained weight and is 100% potty trained! Stay tuned for an update later this week with the results of his blood work!”

Can You Spot SweetPea?

From our friends at NBS Animal Rescue — can you spot our little Sweetpea? One day he was ravaged by maggots and now he’s hanging out with firefighters.  Sweetpea was also on Fox 2 Detroit on Saturday and Sunday (8/25 and 8/26) demonstrating the oxygen mask. ~ diana

“NBSAR volunteers, board members, and canines Corbin and Sweet Pea hit the streets to deliver Pet Oxygen Mask kits to the Detroit Precinct 1 Fire Department and the Warren Fire Department. Both departments were so gracious and excited to have the Pet Oxygen Mask kits for the rigs. You can see the story on Fox 2 tonight at 6PM and 10PM where our fearless leader, Rebecca Akins, talks about our fundraiser with our under 18 volunteers, Jonas and Bailey.

We raised over $1,500 last month and ordered 19 kits to pass out to local fire departments. Warren received 3 today. Detroit received 11. Clawson and Washington will be receiving their kits next weekend.

Both Detroit and Warren were so thankful to us for thinking of them and their needs. Budgets have been cut for public services and there is rarely enough money to buy all the things they need, especially for our canine and feline companions.

We hope they never are in the position to need them, but they are now equipped with the kits to help save lives if they do.”
