Axel – Starved and Abused

6/28/16 – Prayers needed for this abused dog, Axle. It was Sunday when the Roseville, MI police department received an anonymous call about a dog “dying in the street”. The animal control officer was called in and he trailed the dog to a mobile home park where he found this horrible sight. A dog so horribly emaciated it was surprising that he was still alive. It appeared the kids in the park had been feeding him whatever they could find. The animal control officer immediately brought Axle to an emergency hospital where he was kept overnight and then transferred to the veterinary hospital who contracts with the City. Late Monday, 4 Paw 1 Heart received a call asking if we could pay for Axle’s surgery — he had an intestinal blockage and was, in fact, dying. We agreed to pay for the surgery and Axle was taken to another facility because the one he was taken to could not accommodate the surgery. Today he had surgery and he is not doing well. A sock was found in his stomach and it appears it had been there for days. A detective has been assigned to this case and we will keep everyone updated. This case reminds me so much of our Katniss Everdeen it breaks my heart that people can be so disgustingly cruel. ~ diana

6/28/16 – Axle Update: Axle is on a 24-hour watch. He is resting and being pumped with antibiotics. More than the one sock was found in his stomach. Axle has a torn intestinal wall and the doctor believes that this blocked condition was going on for more than a week. With his severe emaciation, along with this surgery, Axle’s recovery is still guarded. Please continue your prayers. We all know how much they’ve helped so many of the animals we have taken on. We have received many offers to give Axle a home but at this time, Axle is the property of the City of Roseville and a cruelty case might be pursued. 4 Paws 1 Heart at this time is working closely with the City for Axle’s medical help. ~ diana

Bella – Her Owner No Longer Wanted Her

6/20/16 – Meet Bella. She is a 7-month old American Staffordshire Terrier/mix. Her owner no longer wanted her so the owner’s father took her to the Romulus Animal Shelter. The shelter did not have any room and said they could euthanize her but they would charge for the procedure. The owners didn’t want to pay and brought Bella back home. A neighbor heard of Bella’s fate and had the owners surrender the dog to her. Now, they need our help and we are happy to give it. Bella will be spayed, vaccinated, and heart worm tested. The rescuer will try to find a perfect home for this cutie. ~ diana

Odin – Happy in His New Home

6/19/16 – As the Father’s Day barbecues come to an end, Odin decides it’s time for a nap. I thought we’d end this Father’s Day celebration with an update on our little Odin. He was hit by a car and temporarily paralyzed. Because of you, we were able to pay for his medical needs and our angel, Gina, fostered him for one year. Finally, that perfect family came along. Here he is today, all tuckered out from a day of celebrating, playing and watching TV. A huge thanks to Odin’s family and all of our friends who help us make miracles happen. ~ diana

Ali – The Little Fighter Caught in a Recliner Keeps Fighting

6/19/16 – Happy Father’s Day to all of our wonderful dads of skin and fur children!! But, let us not forget all of the great moms and dads who sometimes have to play the role of mom and dad. On this last day of the Father’s Day Challenge where all donations will matched by a generous benefactor, I would like to again present Ali and his mom/dad/angel, Gina. Although Ali is healing as each day goes by, he still has a long road ahead which will include a visit or two to the Michigan State Veterinary Medical Center.
Ali, at less than one pound, was caught in a recliner. His two toes were cut off and a serious laceration to his skin was infected. We do not know why this little baby was in a position to have this happen to him but we do know there were other puppies in this litter. The owners were advised of their options, and when the medical staff returned to find out their decision, they found that little Ali had been ‘dumped’.
As Gina has kept us updated, we learned that this little guy is one serious fighter. He had already died once and was brought back to life. Now he appears to be thriving and ready to grow into a phenomenal boy like our girl, Sophia (aka Sommerset), who faced similar skin and infection issues at a very early age (see our website 4paws1heart.org).
Your donations during this challenge will help pay for Ali’s treatment at Michigan State which in the past has averaged $1,000 (that includes the generous matching donation of Michigan State). He will still need to have the remaining part of his two toes amputated. And, of course, this doesn’t include the medical care that has already gone into saving this sweet baby.
There are times in our lives when we have to make those hard decisions. An animal comes to us and we have to determine quality of life, prognosis, and cost. It is never easy. In Ali’s case, Gina saw something in his little closed eyes and knew he needed us to fight with him and that is what we did. A huge thank you, once again, to all of our friends who believe in us and continue to support us. Please take credit in saving the lives of so many who had no one else to be their voice! ~ diana
