Pecan – Update – Beginning to Eat

12/26/20 – “My Christmas Eve rescue made a babystep of improvement tonight.
In between the constant nasal discharge she was able to smell food. I had to put the camera down to help and it was a mess, but this is good! It’s been a struggle to syringe feed every few hours because she couldn’t breathe well. She also finally pooped and urinated on her own this morning! The left eye is just an empty socket and the right eye is very cloudy. She will rarelpecan 12:26:20y open it but the inflammation is beginning to go down.. Pecan will need to see an eye specialist and she may be blind, but she can still live a quality life with the right person. If you would like to help towards her care please visit our website www.4paws1heart.org. – Gina”

Sadie – Her Mom Was Killed by a Dog

12/26/20 – There continues to be so many cats in the cold and snow needing the help of humans. Christmas Eve we were contacted about Sadie. A very sweet, 8-9 weekd old kitten whose mom was attacked and killed by a dog. The finder didn’t have any shelter for Sadie and contacted an independent rescuer we have helped several times. Sadie also has 2 siblings who still need to be rescued. We have authorized the works for these sweet orphans and pray the siblings can be caught. Thank you to our many donors who continue to believe in us and donate their hard-earned dollars to help the abandoned and abused. – diana

Marshmallow – He Kept Showing Up at the Same House; Either Abandoned or Escaped

12/25/20 – As we all continue to pray for little Pecan, I, along with the 4 Paws 1 Heart Board of Directors, want to wish all of our friends, supporters, veterinary partners, and rescuers, a blessed Christmas. During these 12 days of Christmas, may you have that opportunity to enjoy, in some way, your family and friends, and, of course your furbabies who always love you unconditionally.
Here is Marshmallow with some of his new family members. He appeared to have been abandoned by his owners as he kept showing up at the home of his rescuer’s parents. He was in pretty bad shape but very domesticated. His rescuer took Marshmallow to the vet a few times for an ongoing ‘fungal’ infection in his ears but the problem has not gone away. Recently he was told that there is a growth which may be cancerous. The rescuer not only has paid out a considerable amount of money for this poor cat, who may be around 3-5 years old and who also is not neutered and has multiple broken teeth, but he is also dealing with his long-time pet dog who has been diagnosed with cancer and is at the end of her life.
We will be committed to Marshmallow in hopes that he can have a long and fun life with his new family. Again, thank you so very much for helping us give these abandoned animals a second chance at life. – diana

Pecan – Fighting to Live

“My Christmas foster baby Pecan is so very sick.. (I cleaned her nose right away but this is the constant drainage) I wish people would be less selfish and keep their cats indoors because when your cat gets a virus and infects other cats the weakest can die!!
No animal deserves to suffer.. Her one eye is already ruptured and she is only about 10 weeks old! IF she pulls through she will have permanent damage and possibly loss of vision in the only eye she has left. All because of a preventable virus that unvaccinated outdoor cats pass to one another.
I’m doing everything I can for her but that might not be good enough.

Pecan – Found Outside; Freezing, Dirty, Sick and Extremely Malnourished

12/24/20 – “pecan 12:24:20 pecan 12:24:20--Merry Christmas Eve..Meet “Pecan”.
She was found outside yesterday freezing, dirty, sick, and extremely malnourished. Diana from “4 paws 1 heart” was contacted and a few hours ago the good samaritan transported this sick baby to the vet hospital.
There is more than a severe upper respiratory going on. She has a ruptured eye and the other eye may be permanently damaged as well.
I offered to take her home and provide nursing care around the clock. She needs syringe feeding, fluids, meds, and warmth. We don’t know what else will be required long term it’ll depend on how she responds to treatment.
Paws crossed for her and huge thank you to the kind men who got her the care she needs! She would’ve died without them..
If all goes well they will place her in a loving home with someone who can continue to provide whatever she needs. Thank u! – Gina”

Teddy – Update

12/23/20 – Teddy Update. Teddy was scheduled for a follow-up in 2 weeks but before he could get through two days he again seemed to be having difficulty urinating. He was again taken to emergency, in that the back-up continues at all other vets with whom we work. We are very appreciative for Advance Animal Emergency who, even under a lot of stress, have always been very welcoming to our emergency calls and keeping me well informed on our patients. It was determined that Teddy was severely constipated as a result of his urinary tract infection. He was given an enema and meds and he is now resting comfortably with his rescuer, Andra S. She said that Teddy his such a sweet boy. – diana

Teddy – Taken to Emergency with an Apparent Urinary Blockage

12/21/20 – The last case on Sunday was another emergency. Teddy, a cat rescued by Andra S. appeared to have an urinary tract infection or worse, a blockage. He kept attempting to urinate but only a small amount or nothing would come out. What did come out had blood in it. Again, we had to authorize Teddy to go to an emergency hospital. Thankfully, with our friends at Advanced Animal Emergency, who always keep us well informed. Teddy was later released after being treated for an infection and crystals. He will be on a special diet and will be on medication. He is now resting comfortably in his foster home. – diana

Mickey – Update

12/21/20 – What a weekend. It started with Mickey. His rescuer called early Saturday morning to tell me that her son had tested positive for covid and that she was experiencing chest pains. She had gone to the doctor who said the chest issues were a result of anxiety. The rescuer wasn’t confident of that and felt she was unable to take care of Mickey because Dr. Z had told her to keep Mickey away from her son and anyone who may have covid. Thankfully, between Dr. Zalac and our friend Emily K. who has taken on Mileena, I learned more about the virus and pets and Emily found a foster for Mickey who can keep him in a separate room — quarantined, So, once we had Mickey scheduled to go to a safe place, I called Dr. Z to find out more about pets and covid because although I had heard speculation early on about pets and covid, I haven’t heard anything since. Dr. Z advised that her research indicates that cats are susceptible to contracting covid from humans; the jury is still out as to whether cats can transmit the virus to humans or other animals. At this time dogs don’t seem to be as susceptible but the jury is still out. After 14 days of quarantine, Mickey will have exploratory and corrective surgery. (see his story in an earlier post). – diana

Hazel and Burke – Update in their Furever Homes

12/19/20 – During this Christmas week, let’s hear more of your happy updates of animals who were given a second chance at life because of you and 4 paws 1 heart. Also, I hope that all of our Jewish friends had a beautiful and blessed Hanukkah this past week. – diana.
“When you receive an update on (two time) fosters that you adopted out to a family that you knew in you heart was the purrfect one after their first mommy died….and you can’t stop crying happy tears. I haven’t really had an update from them but I just knew they were doing well….but I didn’t know this well! They went from scaredy cats (especially Hazel) to lap cats….what?? I know their 1st Mommy is looking down at them with smiles and love.
