“Kiya’s story: On 3/17/19, a member of an outreach team saw Kiya running in an area of abandoned houses in an extremely, blighted neighborhood & called Streethearts for help. She was very emaciated & needed help now. Our team went & got Kiya & immediately took her to the Vet to be assessed. She was found to be Heartworm positive & very malnourished & emaciated. She has since gained at least 10 lbs & is doing well in her foster home with hopes of starting her Heartworm treatment very soon.”
Max – Was Bounced Around After His Owner Died and Then Was Thrown Out
4/8/19 – Here is Max after being groomed. I earlier posted Max’s story with a photo of him in a crate. And, because his rescuer is a little overwhelmed with other issues, it has taken a while for Max to get into a vet. Last week he finally got to a vet and, unfortunately, was diagnosed with heart worm. Because we were uncomfortable with the vet’s suggested protocol, Max was taken to Patterson Veterinary in Clinton Twp,. by our good friend, Jo C., who had asked if she could help. Max began his treatment for heart worm and then Jo treated Max to her groomer.
As a reminder, Max was thrown out by family after his owner died. He was outside for some 3 weeks, fending for himself, according to a neighbor. An individual rescuer, who we’ve helped on several occasions, took Max in. She later learned that Max had been bounced around for years.
Max is about 5-6 years old and Jo said that he is very sweet and she wishes she could take him in but, unfortunately, her house is at the City’s maximum. Max is in a situation where he could really use some love and crate rest while he goes through his heart worm treatment. If you can be that person, contact me and I will put you in touch with Max’s people. – Diana

Rescue – Found on the Streets with the Parvo Virus
4/3/19 – Meet Rescue. He is 5-6 months old and was found running the streets. A couple of days after rescue, he stopped eating and started showing signs of the parvo virus. The rescuer spent the night providing fluids and tried getting him into a vet the following day. While waiting in the parking lot to get help to get him into the vet’s office, the rescuer contacted us. I asked the rescuer to take Rescue to one of our most-trusted doctorsOrion Animal Hospital.
Fortunately, it was determined that Rescue was in early stages and began treatment immediately. After a couple of days of receiving fluids and drugs, Rescue came through with flying colors and is now looking for his forever home. He is a puppy and needs a home where he will be given love, patience, and training. Please contact his rescuer, Bridget at: [email protected] if you are interested. – Diana

Samson – Found Cowering in the Bushes; Heart Worm Positive
4/1/19 – Samson was found as a stray at the Detroit/Redford border. He was staying in the bushes and growled at everyone who tried to get him. Finally, a rescue took her little dog to where he was and was able to coax him into the car. Due to his growling and unpredictable behavior at first, Samson was going to be taken straight to the Michigan Humane Society shelter. However, while there, he started to show his loving side. A secure semi-permanent foster was found and Samson started to show what a lover he is! Based on his initial reaction to the rescuer, it is almost certain that he would have been put down at the shelter. Unfortunately, poor Samson tested positive for HW which would have even more ensured his death at MHS. But instead, we were contacted and we agreed to pay for his heart worm treatment, neuter, and vaccinations. He is doing much better and because of his good manners and the fact that he is housebroken makes us suspect that he was dumped where he was found. Maybe he was waiting for his owners to come back….? We are guessing that if he was dumped, it may have been due to his HW. As we’ve suspected in so many other cases. After two weeks of searching for his owners, Samson is moving forward with his new life and is available through Rebel Dogs Detroit. Please contact them if you are interested. Please consider making a donation today because we cannot continue to help these many animals without your support. Thank YOU – Diana

Louie – The Owner Could No Longer Care For Him After an Accident and Was Being Surrendered to a Shelter
3/28/19 – Meet Louie. We think he will be officially adopted this weekend! His back story is that while a great rescue friend was at the Humane Society with Samson, another rescue, Louie was being brought in and surrendered by his owner’s family. The owner fell while she was walking him and could no longer keep him. She had adopted him only 3 weeks prior when he was surrendered to the Monroe MHS. Louie had been badly neglected by his original owner and was covered in matted fur, overgrown toenails that caused sores on his paw pads, and he has severe separation anxiety due to being left in a crate for up to 18 hours a day. His recent owner loved him dearly and cried so hard when she had to give him up, but she is older and cannot keep him as she will be in a rehab center for many months. The family surrendered Louie to our friend, Shayla, and she promised to find him the perfect home! We were happy to help with his medical needs. ~ diana

Max – His Owner Passed Away and He Was Thrown Out to Fend for Himself
3/27/19 – Meet Max. His owner passed away and the owner’s children tossed him out into the backyard. After 3 weeks of fending for himself outside, a neighbor contacted an individual rescuer who we assist quite a bit and she contacted us. Max is scheduled to see a vet and a groomer this week complements of 4 Paws 1 Heart. We will have more information about him after he sees a vet. Word has it that he was an absolute lap dog with his elderly owner. Anyone interested can private message me and I will put you in contact with the rescuer. ~ diana
