Brutus – Blind and Feline Leukemia Positive

7/15/16 – I received a call from a person who works at one of the great veterinary clinics we work with. The person was interested in adopting a blind kitten/cat. She explained that she had always tried to save the special needs kitties and her 15 year old cat who was born without eyes, now had an aggressive form of cancer. Even though her baby had already had two surgeries, the prognosis was not good.
I put the call out to our friends who we’ve helped in the past with their rescues. Someone responded that she did have a 4 month old kitten (Brutus) she had rescued who had one eye which would need to be removed once he was old enough and healthy, and another eye where he was partially blind.
I put the rescuer in touch with the potential adopter and the adopter fell in love and took Brutus home. Unfortunately, when Brutus was taken to the vet to be checked, it was determined that he was positive for feline leukemia. Fortunately, for Brutus, his new mom wasn’t going to let him go. The veterinarian will be retesting Brutus in three weeks to make sure this was not a ‘false positive’; he will also do additional blood work. When test results are back, a decision will be made as to whether the one eye will be removed. In any case 4 Paws 1 Heart is committed to doing whatever is necessary to give this sweetie the best life possible with his new mom. Please keep in mind that Brutus’ sibling has always been vaccinated and the mom is working closely with the doctors.
I loved this statement from Brutus’ new mom — “he will always have LOTS of love no matter how long he my have. I can’t put him to sleep because he may or my not have a healthy future, in that case everyone would worry about their future because we don’t know ourselves if we will ever develop an illness that may or may not take our lives.” Please say a little prayer for this very sweet kitty. ~ diana
