Boaters Practice Safety for Your Pets

7/4/12 Keep in mind if you have an animal in a boat always make sure they’re safe and restrained somehow. A Labrador jumped out of a boat today and got caught in the propeller. Owners were absolutely devastated. This was a terrible ACCIDENT that ended fatally. Never assume that it can’t happen to you. Always pay close attention to your animals safety… ~ Gina

7/5/12  How many times have we talked about animals who are allowed to roam freely (mainly dogs) in a car, stick their heads out of the windows (or sunroofs as I saw the other day), or sit on their owner’s laps. If you’re a boater or happen to dine or visit on the water, how many times have you seen dogs walking around the boat or sitting on the bow unrestrained. We, as responsible pet owners, need to take responsibility for the safety of our pets. I feel so very bad for this family but, if you care, you must consider putting the same rules in place that you would for your children. ~ diana
Lori Jobak(4Paws Health & Wellness)  And, if I may add the following advice: please buy a doggie flotation jacket for the docks and for boating!! Not all dogs know how to swim and when panic stricken, can quickly drown. Strong water/waves/currents can lead to fatalities. Certain breeds and body structures cause some dogs to be “sinkers”.

Pregnant Mary Shot in the Chest

Update 07/15/2012

“Miss Mary LOVES her foster siblings. She is such an amazing dog, I can’t even fathom why or how someone could shoot this innocent girl. She does not have a mean bone in her whole body! My neighbor came to the fence today while she was out and Mary just wagged her tail and jumped up to try to give kisses. Thank you for saving this sweet girl and giving us the chance to help her to know what a dogs life is really all about :)”

Update: Loveabull Paws Rescue will be picking up Mary on July 4. Good Luck to Mary and our good friends at Loveabull Paws Rescue. ~ diana

Update 7/3/12 From Erica at Loveabull Paws Rescue: “We will be bringing Mary into rescue as soon as she starts feeling a little better. Mary’s unborn puppies didn’t make it through the very extensive surgery she had to remove bullet pieces from her chest and lungs. Mary is now stable and aside from being in a little pain (which is normal) she is in good spirits and still gives little tail waggs and kisses. Please keep Mary in your thoughts and prayers as she continues to recover from this very traumatic painful experience! “

Update 7/2/12 The doctor that did the surgery did an amazing job and she saved Mary’s life! When I saw Mary today she was in some expected pain, but she was in good spirits (some tail waggs and kisses). It’s horrible and unfortunate what happened to her, but this is the reality of the world we live in. In this field we see it much too often, but with “teamwork” Mary was able to be saved! 4 Paws was able to pay for her surgery, Venus lined up a rescue willing to take her, and Loveabull Paws Rescue reached out to welcome her in open arms into their amazing rescue group. This is what it’s all about!!! One more life given a second chance!!! ~ Gina

Mary was at the wrong place at the wrong time today…but….she is in good hands and will be properly cared for from now on. Two gun shot victims were brought in to the emergency on July 1. Mary’s sibling didn’t make it because he was shot in the head. Mary (pregnant) was shot in the chest. 4P1H provided the medical care and there is a rescue group lined up to take Mary if she pulls through this. I will provide an update once more information is available. ~ gina

Ode the Powder Puff Chinese Crested

4 Paws 1 Heart is happy to help Ode who is in the caring hands of Sharon Gorski of K9 Resque. Lots of prayers for his quick recovery. ~ diana

HE went to the vet today, and we found out that he is most likely a Powder Puff Chinese Crested.
He is at least between 8-10 years of age… he has cataracts, and  he has a yeast infection in his ears.. he has some minor skin allergies on his skin.. He needs several teeth pulled, as he is not able to chew anything, he has kennel cough…. and he has a heart murmur… he needs an ultra sound done to determine what is causing the heart murmur this will help us determine if he can be out under anesthesia to get his teeth pulled and neutered.
UPDATE:::::He is able to eat a mush of canned dog food, sweet potatoes and  warm water…… And he even with a day’s worth of meds he is on the mend….. just imagine what he will be like when he is 100% better…

Hercules Hydrotherapy Session

Hercules had both of his back legs purposely broken as discipline for getting into the garbage. He was taken away from his owner who was charged with cruelty and received 12 months, non-report probation. Today he is in the hands of 4 Paws 1 Heart, an organization started August 18, 2010 which funds medical treatment for abandoned, abused, and stray companion animals.

Hercules Update ~ 6/26/2012

Hercules Update: I went to visit Hercules at his hydro-therapy session on Tuesday. He is getting so tall I couldn’t believe it. He’s also starting to take chances that he shouldn’t take in climbing around on things. We have to remember he is a puppy and he forgets his limitations. Also, I think the fact that he’s hanging around with 4 cats is rubbing off on him. He will again be staying with Gina for about a week and will be getting neutered during that time. He is also going to be scheduled for some behavioral training. Hercules continues to be one happy puppy. ~ diana

Hercules Hydro Therapy Update

Hercules had lots of fun in this session (6/21/12) as he retrieved a couple toys in the water. He swam with the toys in his mouth like a pro! Dr. Kern has some photos that I hope she shares as she participated in the session with us yesterday. ~ Lori Jobak, 4 Paws Health & Wellness.

Olive and Her New BFF

6/22/12  Olive was fostered by Gina until Hercules required Gina’s attention in mid-May.  She then went to stay with Carrie Krausmann of Lil’ Dogs Resort ang received lots of love and attention and met many new friends.  The parents of one of the dogs who would stay at the resort fell in love with Olive and on June 12 she was adopted.  We’ve added a photo of Olive with her new BFF, Bailey. ~ diana

Hercules the Star!

Hercules Ready for His Work Out!

Stair Training

Getting a Massage

Hercules Update: Hercules is doing very well. He is such a good boy. The cats are adjusting slowly and he is being very patient although he would really like to play with them. He is catching on nicely to the routine here and his exercises — will do anything for food! We have to watch him closely – he puts everything in his mouth (grass, sticks, cat toys!). He also likes to try to romp around with toys as expected, but we have to try to limit this a bit. Poor guy, he just wants to be a puppy, but if allowed to overdo it he will limp more later. This is a consistent feature, so we are taking everything slowly. He would rather set the pace, but he seems to pay a price for too much freedom sometimes.

His rehabilitation therapy is staggered out through the day to pace his endurance and also to burn some puppy energy along the way. He is getting massages frequently (which he really seems to like. We take short leash walks 4 to 5 times daily. He is learning basic words and commands – he is a quick study! House training is really coming along well too. He is doing some weight shifting and balance work along with some slow steps and inclines. We vary it to keep it interesting for him. He also gets some therapeutic laser and acupuncture. He goes to hydrotherapy twice weekly also. He has quite the busy schedule! He is looking forward to starting obedience classes next week.

I have finally sorted through the pile of photos and videos accumulated so far! He is quite the ham! I will attach photos and videos in multiple messages, so that they make it through.

Chris and I are truly enjoying having Hercules here and watching the new stuff he figures out each day. ~ Dr. Tari Kern

Hercules Update ~ 4 Paws Health & Wellness

Lori Jobak of 4Paws Health & Wellness provided this update on our Hercules: “I would like to provide a Hercules update: He had had his fifth 15-minute session and is doing well. He is “all puppy” and has a very short attention span but those “delicious treats” help to keep him focused and motivated. His physical canine rehab partner joined us in the water yesterday. Hercules has limited range of motion in his rear legs due to his limitations from his abuse but he is ‘swimming’ with them and his front legs are doing well in the water! Next to having my face slobbered with his kisses, it is a joy working with this beautiful boy!!”
