Kitty of the Corn – Dumped in a Field to Die

8/4/20 – The “Kitty of the Corn” was dumped at a very kind couple’s house. The very young kitten had a huge, horrible abscess on her neck and although the couple tried to find a doctor who would prescribe antibiotics, all, understandably, wanted to personally see the cat. The couple has not been working regularly because of the virus and contacted us for help. Kitty was taken to one of our partner vets who confirmed that this was a very nasty infection that kept growing. Part of the dark spot (as you can see in the photo) was old tissue, hair, and dirt. The doctor was able to ‘rip’ that off pretty quickly, cleaned it, and stitched it up. She then was tested (negative) for FIV/FeLV, and given basic vaccines. When she weighs enough, she will be spayed. This morning the rescuer sent me a message saying that “Kitty” is doing great and will have her stitches out in two weeks and then scheduled for spaying. “Kitty is right back at being lovey and playful”. And, she has obviously found her furever home. Just as a side note, I don’t usually share some of the injury photos we get but I think it’s important for the general public to know of the kinds of injuries and illnesses these animals have been facing, more in the past five months, than I’ve ever seen in a similar period over the past 10 years. I thank God every day for the many people who rescue and provide furever, loving homes, and to our friends who are so kitty of the corn kitty of the corn infection kitty of the corn w:brandy werczynskigenerous with their donations. – diana

Jefferson – Found in the Middle of Jefferson Ave. – Unable to Move

8/3/20 – Once again, it was a busy weekend. On Friday night I received a call about a cat found in the middle of Jefferson, near the spillway, in Harrison Twp., MI. The cat couldn’t move and the finder thought he might have had a broken leg. After being assured the cat could be stabilized until morning, we made arrangements to find a vet in the morning. Thankfully the doctors where our co-founder works as a vet tech, squeezed in Jefferson on Saturday morning although they were booked to the max. Here is Gina’s report:

“The doctor looked at him and we did some x rays of the pelvic area. It looks like he sustained an injury to the pelvis causing instability in his hind end. He can carefully stand and he is able to urinate in a shallow tray which is very important. He tested negative for fiv/felv. There are a few abrasions on his legs. He had some elevations in bloodwork so we are doing antibiotics, pain meds, rest, and anti-inflammatory with very close monitoring over the weekend. He might need surgery or he may heal over time. It will be day to day of making sure he will eat, drink, urinate, and have bowel movements. He is neutered and extremely gentle. He was dehydrated and anemic. He was given some fluids under the skin and treated for fleas. The man who saved him is really kind; he literally saved this cat’s life. We need more people like this in the world — unselfish and compassionate.- Gina”

His finder, Doug, will continue to look for Jefferson’s owner. If one isn’t found, he will foster him until he can find a furever home. We will continue to be committed to him just in case he needs further medical. Unfortunately, it seems that every cat we are called about these days has a severe injurty or illness. During this time of no fundraisers, your donations continue to be lifesaving. – diana

Zeus – Home with his Foster Mom

/29/20 – Good News!!! Little Big Boy Zeus is on his way home to his foster home. He was picked up just a little while ago and as I was paying the bill I heard him squealing with happiness. Well, actually he was squealing while he got his face washed–I guess he didn’t much care for that. He’s been eating like a champ and he will be watched over closely. Please continue to pray for this little one. You know if anything changes, we’ll have him right back to the hospital. We are committed to this fighter. Thank you to all who donated and/or said a prayer. We can still use your support but because of all of you we can continue to help those who need us. I’m sure we will get an updated photo soon. – May God Bless our Village. – diana
P.S. Just another bit of information I learned earlier. The box these babies were in was covered. I had wondered why they couldn’t get out. Thankfully a wonderful woman who cares for cats in the neighborhood heard the weak rustling when she passed by the box and got Zeus to safety. Hopefully the same fate as the others kittens and mom will come to those subhumans who did this. Also, the case has been reported to the City’s animal control.

Zeus – More to the Story

7/29/20 – A friend of 4p1h just added more to the story. I was told that the finder of Zeus actually learned that the mother was purposely killed and the killers bragged about putting the kittens to “bake in the sun”. Unfortunately, that is what happened but before Zeus succumbed to the heat and the fleas and maggots, a kind woman passed by the box and saved Zeus. I know we all believe that these people need to be punished but, unfortunately, this is Detroit and we all know very well, that Animal Control and the police have much bigger issues than poor cats. I’m disgusted by this latest news and can only sincerely hope that whoever is responsible for this will meet their karma sooner than later. -diana

7/29/20 – Zeus update. The good news is that Zeus had a blood transfusion yesterday, was put on fluids, and has made it through the night. The doctor called me this morning and reported that this “little sweetheart” is not yet out of the woods but is eating good and an important medical number (sorry for my ignorance) which was ‘9’ when he got to the emergency, is now at ’22’; normal for a kitten is ’25’. Zeus is only 1.1 lbs. so you can imagine how difficult of a struggle it has been for him and the doctors. Zeus will be kept in the hospital through the day and I will talk with the doctor a little later to determine our next step. We do know that he has a great foster lined up who is experienced with at-risk kittens and took him in the night he got out of the first emergency hospital. But we will do what is best. We have learned over the years that, when possible, the love and care in an experienced home can make the difference to get us over the finish line. Thank you so very much to all of you who have donated and prayed. I will keep you all informed. Your DONATIONS and PRAYERS are still needed, we are less than half way to what we thinK Zeus’ bill will be. Anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated.- dianazeus 7:29:20

Zeus – Purposely Left in a Covered Box with Siblings and Mom — All Died Except Him

7/28/20 – Donations and Prayers Needed – Zeus is 6 weeks old. He, his three siblings, and a mom were all left in a box in the 90+ degree sun. The next day, the siblings and the mom were dead and the only when left was Zeus, covered in maggots and fleas. The rescuer took him to an emergency hospital but because the rescuer could only afford so much, he was released from the hospital. I was contacted this morning and he is now back in another emergency with our commitment to help him. Zeus is beyond emaciated, he will require IV’s and a transfusion, he also appears to have an upper respiratory infection. We have a 24-hour plan in place and pray that he can make it through the transfusion. I gave this decision a lot of thought but the little guy fought ever since he was put in the box of hell so we just had to give him a fighting chance. We could really use the help of our friends.Thank you for anything you can do. – diana

Gus – His Owner Was Going to Take Him to a Shelter

7/25/20 – Gus was going to be taken to the shelter because he defecates and urinates outside the litter box. An independent rescuer, with whom we we often assist, rescued the sweet little guy and contacted us. Gus was taken to one of our favorite vets who did blood work and checked him over to ensure there were no medical issues. Gus was neutered, vaccinated and tested for FIV and FeLV and Andrea brought Gus to her home to work with him. During the course of 6 weeks, Gus went from urinating on a “pee” pad to urinating in the litter box and defecating outside the box to using a ‘pee’ pad. And then, miraculously, during the night, Gus defecated in the box. The lesson here is that we never know what rescue animals have gone through in their lives on the streets or in neglectful/abusive homes. But, with patience and love, miracles can happen. Anyone interested in this handsome boy should contact Andrea at: [email protected] – diana

Miko – RIP – Found in a Trash Bag

7/22/20 – RIP Miko. He was found in a trash bag which had been placed next to the work place of a very kind man who was committed to keeping him. The cat had a gash on his body and seemed unable to walk — overall he appeared to be in “pretty bad shape”. We were able to get him into one of our favorite doctors, Dr. Zalac, and when Miko arrived, his temperature wasn’t even registering. Dr. Z performed some tests and immediately put him on fluids which eventually helped raise his temperature slightly. Miko was kept overnight but by morning his temperature was again no longer registering. I spoke with Dr. Z this morning and Miko’s prognosis was very poor. He continued to only lay on his side and the doctor suspected brain damage from possible trauma which also may have caused the gash in his body. Dr. Z believed that anything that could be done other than what had been done already, which included more testing, would be more heroic and Miko would have a very small chance of survival or a quality of life. After consulting with the rescuer, it was decided to follow the doctor’s recommendation and let Miko cross the Rainbow Bridge.
Let me just say again that this has been a horrendous Spring and Summer for the animals. We continue to thank all of those people who don’t turn their backs on an animal in need and without our supporters, we would not be able to respond to the calls for help. – diana

Trixie Anne – Rescued From a Dangerous Situation Needing Medical for a Cherry Eye

7/7/20 – Trixie Ann was rescued from a very dangerous situation. The poor girl has a cherry eye which will have to be treated; if left untreated, Trixie Ann would be in much pain and could go blind. She is seeing one of our partner doctors next week and will also be vaccinated, tested, and spayed. A huge thank you to all of our supporters who continue to donate so that we can continue to help all of these homeless animals who need our help. – diana

Zena – Found with Bullets in Her Spine

6/3/20 – Meet ‘super sweet’, 2 year old Zena. A couple of days ago we were asked if we could help with a partially paralyzed cat. She had no feeling in her tail and her back toes. People in the neighborhood were familiar with her and said she had been dragging her back feet for at least a year but no one stepped up to help. Her poor little paws were raw from dragging them for so long. Thankfully, Keri found her and reached out to us. She was taken to a vet yesterday where x-rays were done and it turns out that this poor baby has a bullet in her spine. It is lodged where the nerves are for her colon and bladder areas as well as her toes. The doctor said that she is not in pain and the staff fell in love with her. Zena was snap tested (negative), vaccinated, was given a cortisone injection, and treated for fleas and ticks. The doctor also said that she may regain feeling but also suggested that a neurological surgeon be consulted to determine if the bullet can be removed. In the mean time, Zena is getting lots of love, attention, and rest with Keri’s mom and she will again be seen by the vet in a few weeks. We will continue to follow up on this sweetie and at least pay for the specialist visit. We will then take it from there. These situations continue to break my heart knowing there are so many more animals out there being abused and tortured. Thank you to everyone who supports our mission and who never turn their backs on an animal in need. – diana
